Die Begeisterung der Bevölkerung für Zuaven führte dazu, daß zahlreiche Freiwilligeneinheiten in den einzelnen Staaten aufgestellt wurden, die die Bezeichnung „Zouaves“ erhielten.
Die folgende Zusammenstellung ist sicherlich nicht vollständig, aber ob alle diese Einheiten tatsächlich eine Zuavenuniform getragen oder nur den Namen geführt haben, ist leider nur noch schwer nachweisbar.

Die Vivandieres „Regimentstöchter“
Die Zuaveneinheiten
kopierten nicht nur die Uniformen ihrer französischen Vorbilder,
sondern übernahmen auch den Brauch, „Regimentstöchter“
(daughters of the regiment) mitzuführen. Es handelte sich dabei
um junge Frauen, die nicht nur als Marketenderinnen ihren Lebensunterhalt
bestritten, sondern auch um Frauen, die als „Maskottchen“
und häufig auch als Krankenschwestern ohne Besoldung in den Einheiten
dienten. Sie dürfen nicht mit den Frauen verglichen werden, die
als Männer verkleidet in manchen Regimentern kämpften.
Nach dem französischem Vorbild, das in den napoleonischen Kriegen
entstanden war, wurden sie „Vivandières“, seltener
auch „Cantinières“ genannt und genossen in der Truppe
im Gegensatz zu manchen Frauen, die den Tross begleiteten, hohes Ansehen.
Es handelte sich häufig um Töchter von Offizieren oder Ehefrauen
von Unteroffizieren, die von den Soldaten zu „Regimentstöchtern“
gewählt wurden.
Sie marschierten in Uniform bei militärischen Paraden und Musterungen
mit und waren bei Vereidigungen zugegen. Während einige ihr Regiment
über die Wintermonate verließen, blieben andere sogar noch
während der Kämpfe bei ihre Truppe. So wurden sie zu einer
Art Krankenschwester und spendeten den verwundeten Soldaten auf dem
Schlachtfeld nicht nur Trost, sondern auch Schnaps und Wasser aus mitgeführten
kleinen Fäßchen. Zur Verteidigung waren sie mit Säbel,
Pistolen und sogar Gewehren ausgerüstet.
Die Uniform, die sie trugen, bestand aus einer Hose, die der der Männer
glich, darüber ein knielanger Rock und eine Uniformjacke im Stil
der Uniform der Einheit, doch häufig mit mehr Verzierungen. Dazu
gehörte ein mehr oder weniger phantasievoller Hut.
Neben den Zuaveneinheiten hatten auch andere Truppenteile, in denen
vorwiegend eingewanderte Ausländern dienten, solche Frauen. So
zog zum Beispiel das 39. New York Regiment, die „Garibaldi Guards”,
mit sechs Regimentstöchern in den Krieg.
Viele der Vivendieres blieben anonym, da sie in den offiziellen Berichten nicht erwähnt wurden, andere erhielten nach Erscheinen der ersten Regimentschroniken eine gewisse Popularität.
Am bekanntesten
wurde Marie Tepe, „French Mary“ genannt, die im 114. Pennsylvania
Regiment, den Collis Zuaven, diente.
Sie wurde bei Fredericksburg verwundet und erhielt nach der Schlacht
von Chancellorsville das Kearny-Kreuz, das Brigadegeneral Birney 1863
als Tapferkeitsauszeichnung für Unteroffiziere und Mannschaften
gestiftet hatte.

Sie ist mit einer Pistole bewaffnet und hat ein Fäßchen am

Auf der Jacke trägt sie stolz das Kearny-Kreuz.
Marie Tepe nahm nach dem Krieg noch an vielen Veteranentreffen teil,
aber ihre schmerzhafte Verwundung heilte nie richtig aus, und so beging
sie 1901 mit Arsen Selbstmord.
